The voxel in 3D art for video games
Updated: Jan 27, 2023
Voxel Art is a digital technique that is meeting more and more followers to its ranks. And it is not for less: the creative possibilities are endless.
The great and most common applications are in video games, 3D animation or the production of compositions and illustrations for social networks. In the ambit of video games, voxel art allows the creation of more interactive and immersive environments and games.
But what is it?
This technique is closely related to pixel art, but don't confuse it: the pixel only works in 2D. The voxel (word formed by adding volumetric and pixel) is the evolved version of the pixel and uses three planes or dimensions X, Y and Z. The latter is the differentiating parameter since it allows occupying the three-dimensional space with its volume, height, length, width and depth.
Another characteristic of voxel art is that in most cases, Voxels of a single colour are used in their texture since they are usually small and of the same size, admitting artistic creations in the "mosaic" style.
Creation Tools
The artists and professionals of this digital art use a particular type of software: the voxel editor. The program that stands out the most for creating them is MagicaVoxel, although there are also others like Qubick, Voxedit, Goxel or Particubes (for iOS).
Some games made with voxel art are Minecraft, CrossyRoad, Industries of Titan, Teardown or Duck Shooting.
